Taranto

Taranto is a coastal city in southern Italy. It lies between the Mar Grande (Big Sea) and Mar Piccolo (Little Sea) bodies of water. Bridges link the mainland to the old town, on a small island. This is home to the 15th-century Aragonese Castle, the Spartan Museum of Taranto, and San Cataldo Basilica, with a baroque facade. The MArTA Archaeological Museum has a collection of artifacts from prehistory to the Middle Ages.

Fortress
Nestled on the enchanting island of Borgo Antico, the Castello Aragonese is a stunning fortress that dates back to the late 15th century. This historical marvel was constructed atop remnants of earlier structures, including a Norman castle and Byzantine citadel, showcasing its rich heritage. As you explore this majestic site, you'll be captivated by its impressive walls and towers built under Ferdinand II of Aragon.
The entrance is free, it is at fixed times, it is a navy museum and the tour is guided by a navy guide. I recommend that you make a reservation so that you don't have emotions, we didn't know and we didn't, but we were still allowed access, I think it's related to the number of visitors at that time. The guide's explanations are interesting and complete, in Italian anyway, but you can still take pictures of the castle, the interior models, the surroundings and enjoy the sunset if you are at the right time.

Impressive fortress protecting inner marina. Still active military object. Thus you have to make appointment to visit it but it’s free of charge.

A very nice visit at the castle. A navy official provides a guided tour for free (in Italian) every hour. The tour gives information over the history of Taranto and the castle. I found it very informative and entertaining. I would recommend doing it if you are visiting Taranto. Also I was amazed that by the sunset, they displayed the Italian flag with lights on one of the sides of the Costello while playing some anthem (I wish I knew what was it), I loved that moment.

A beautiful castle belongs to the Italian navy, but an unpleasant surprise awaited us, you must have booked a tour guide, that's the only way you can enter...!!! It doesn't even matter so it's worth a visit. Highly recommended.

Beautiful historical monument with free entrance! Half an hour is enough for the visit, where between others you can see the jail of French General Dumas.

We arrived just as the free tour was starting so we were able to jump in. The 45min tour gives you a good overview of the history of the site. Definitely worth a visit

This castle has an amazing history. The free guided tour by a member of the Navy is very interesting. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about history. We had no problem parking right outside the castle (however it is low season, February). I really recommend a visit here!

The National Archaeological Museum of Taranto, also known as Marta, is a treasure trove that chronicles the rich history of Taranto through an impressive collection of artifacts. Established in 1887, it stands as Apulia's first territorial museum and has evolved significantly over the years. Visitors can explore items ranging from Paleolithic carvings to vessels from the early Middle Ages.
The museum's extensive collection of artifacts tells the story of people from pre-history to the middle ages. Fascinating, beautifully displayed, clearly explained in English. Parking was available on the street, and a good seafood restaurant is across the street. Could happily spend many hours there.

Wow, so much to see in this museum. You’ll wear out before you get through it all. Fascinating history of the various peoples who inhabited Taranto and the surrounding area. Make sure to see the cask of the Greek athlete, including his bones and awards, with a very informative narration.

I have no idea why we were allowed in, since it was made clear to us as we went round that we were NOT welcome with our 2 year old and 5 year old children. We were stalked by unfriendly staff the entire visit, glaring at us everywhere we went. Not a single smile or friendly word from anyone, just cold stares and admonishments. We were told off for drinking from a bottle of water (seriously?!) told off when one child momentarily sat down on the floor to rest whilst we were reading a placard and told off again for speaking to one another too loudly. I do have to wonder who we could possibly have disturbed, since we were the only visitors there. I would have understood the close policing if the children were behaving badly, or were left unsupervised, but that simply wasn’t the case. We were with them and watching them all the time and we didn’t allow them to touch anything. We were simply trying to enjoy the exhibits but never felt we could relax. In the end we just left because we felt so uncomfortable. All in all, a thoroughly unpleasant experience.

And impressive collection of ancient artifacts. It’s mine boggling to think some of these relics date back to the six - eighth century BC. Beautifully displayed with good lighting and historical commentary. It would be nice to have audio guide option.

Jonian Dolphin Conservation offers an unforgettable experience for marine enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Set sail on the stunning Ionian Sea aboard the impressive 12-meter catamaran, Lady-Hawke, where you'll engage in vital research to protect local dolphin populations. As a participant, you’ll have the chance to use advanced monitoring equipment like HD cameras and hydrophones while working alongside dedicated biologists and researchers.
My sister who works as a marine biologist has been recommending me to take part in this small journey for the past two years. It was incredible to discover how many beautiful creatures we can find in their amazing habitat, and the work that the guys are doing is essential in order to study the dolphins, to preserve their territory and to guarantee them a safe future. I was born in Taranto and I rarely come back to visit, but after this experience I understood that my land has a lot more to offer than I could imagine. I hope to come back to visit soon. A massive thanks to Monica and Alessandro, I really appreciated the way you treated all guests, and I'm also thankful for having seen you keeping the sea clean from potential dangers like plastic and fishing nets.

This was an absolutely fantastic experience. Initially I was worried about spending 5 hours on a boat but the time flew so quickly that we didn't even realize it. We were lucky to see dolphins, turtles, and many other species on the surface, this is not always possible though and does not depend on the crew... The members of the association were so helpful and polite, they revealed so many details of their work and were careful to answer each of our questions. I was amazed at how respectful they are in regards to the sea life. Make sure to book your trip in advance and get ready to see unforgettable sequences of marine life!

An amazing experience. It is magnificent to see the beauty, power and elegance of those wonderful creatures. It is unbelievable how close they came to our observation deck and seeing them in their natural environment and behaviour made us simply speechless. The local guides on board are very skilled biologists and they really know what they are talking about. An appropriate English translation was offered, which makes it a wonderful half-day trip also for non-italian speakers like us. We would join this trip for sure the next time we visit Puglia. A big thanks to the entire staff.

This excursion was definitely a highlight of our trip to Italy. It was well organized and highly informative. Being able to observe these dolfins in their natural habitat was like nothing I had ever experienced. The well being of these animals is of paramount importance to the staff and crew. When we would come upon a family of dolfins they would shut off the catamaran's engine and ask us to speak quietly so as to not agitate the animals. It was an amazing opportunity and one that I would highly recommend.
Cybèle D — Google review
A day that we will always remember and changed our perspective forever. We spent the day with the association on their boat with our 3 daughters (the youngest is 4), and it was amazing. We could see more dolphins that we could dream of (stripped and buttlenose dolphins), playing and jumping in front of our boat. The association members are passionate and do everything to transmit their love for cetaces' and explain how to protect them. The dolphins were never attracted by food or tracked down. If they seem shy, we just stopped following them but the stripped ones were amazingly curious. Even though everyone else spoke English, Juli was kind enough to translate everything for us, which made the tour as educational as it was impressive. Just remember that you need to bring your lunch (drinks are provided for) and sunscreen. No need for swimming equipment since it is no allowed to swim with the dolphins.
Virginie G — Google review
We went on the 20/7 and saw 2 large groups of dolphins (more than 50 in total). It was an amazing and beautiful experience to see them in their natural habitat. The crew is passionate and dedicated to nature preservation and they share their passion with all passengers. A wonderful way to increase awareness on how to help dolphins at individual level. Thank you for you work!

San Cataldo's Cathedral is a must-see in Taranto, located on the Ionian coast of Puglia. It is the oldest cathedral in the region, dating back to the 10th century and showcasing a mix of Romanesque and Baroque architecture. The cathedral has undergone various additions and renovations over time, resulting in a unique blend of Byzantine, medieval, and modern elements. Its Baroque-style facade was added in the 18th century.

(Translated by Google) The Cathedral of San Cataldo in Taranto is a fascinating place that preserves a precious artistic and historical heritage. Its architecture combines the rigor of the Romanesque with touches of Byzantine and Baroque art, making it an authentic treasure chest of beauty. Among the most significant works: The Chapel of San Cataldo, richly decorated in Baroque style, houses the relics of the patron saint and represents one of the focal points of the cathedral. The mosaic floor, unfortunately partially lost, is a unique testimony to the Byzantine influence on the city. The apse, with its Romanesque ciborium, offers a solemn and evocative atmosphere, reflecting the religious style of the time. The frescoes, dating back to different eras, add further artistic value, telling the long history of the cathedral and the city.

(Translated by Google) A Cathedral that seems insignificant from the outside, but which inside reveals hidden treasures and beautiful surprises. First of all, the cell of the reliquary of San Cataldo is so frescoed and rich in polychrome marble that it looks like a miniature Sistine Chapel. Then the crypt is beautiful, with columns of various styles, from Doric onwards, previously seen only in places of worship located in Tuscany and Umbria. Furthermore, the coffered coffers of the central nave are notable, reminiscent of Santa Maria Maggiore. A Cathedral that has nothing to envy of anyone, not even the churches of the city of Rome. A church that would make even the capital of Italy pale.

(Translated by Google) Located in Via Duomo, almost in a central position on the island of the ancient city, the cathedral owes its importance to the presence of the relics of the patron saint: Bishop Cataldo of Irish origins. In its conformation, the entire building is the stratified result of different building phases. The existence of a pre-existing three-nave basilica with a single apse, probably built in the 7th century. was documented by archaeological excavations conducted in the area of the naves. On this area stands the current cathedral with a Latin cross planimetric layout, the result of the grafting of two distinct buildings, recognizable in the Capocroce area, pertaining to a building in Carrompana. cruciform (second half of the 10th century), and in the basilica body referable to the Norman building phase. Below the head of the cross, consisting of three barrel-vaulted arms with a dome on plumes, extends the crypt which follows the same layout but with the arms divided into two naves by columns surmounted by slabs on which cross-shaped vaults are set. The walls of the succorpus bear traces of the frescoes painted between the 13th and 15th centuries. of which we note the tritico palimpsest with S. Cataldo, -S Mara Maddalena, Zosimo and S. Maria Egiziaca: In the second half of the 11th century. the building was enlarged towards the east with the construction of the basilica body with three naves covered with trusses and punctuated by arches on the bare columns with equally re-used capitals. The works had to be completed in 1160, a date legible on a fragment of the mosaic floor signed by a magister Petroius. Between the 17th and 18th centuries. the carredrale took on a new baroque appearance whose splendor remains, fortunately surviving the restorations carried out between 1948 and 1952, the wooden coffered ceiling, the chapels of S5., Sacramento and S. Cataldo, respectively to the left and right of the choir. The large chapel of S. Cataldo, commissioned by illustrious figures and built starting from 1657, is unanimously considered a unique in the panorama of Apulian Baroque. With an elliptical plan preceded by a vestibule and characterized by a small ornamental marble dress, it preserves the silver statue of S. Cataldo. Probably designed by Cosimo Fanzago, important Neapolitan marble workers, painters and sculptors took turns in the decoration. Among these we remember Paolo de Matreis who in 1714 executed the fresco of the vault with the Glory of S. Cataldo and Giuseppe Sanmartino who created six marble statues between 1772-1773 From the outside, the cultural stratification that distinguishes the entire monument is clearly perceptible. The baroque façade, placed before the late Gothic vestibule, created by the architect Mauro Manieri in 1%J3, is associated with the medieval decorative decoration of oriental taste which invests the parisi and the tambour with theories of small arches on columns and mirrors with two-tone decorations with geometric motifs. Divided into three parts by a double order of pilasters, uninterrupted by a projecting entablature on which a broken tympanum is inserted, it preserves in the lower register a single portal between two niches with the tattoos of St. Mark and St. Peter. In the upper register, crowned by a triangular tympanum, there is a large window, decorated with floral garlands, flanked by two niches with the statues of S. Irene and San Cataldo (Original) Ubicata in Via Duomo, quasi in posizione centrale nell'isola della città antica, la cattedrale la la sua importanza alla presenza delle reliquie del Santo patrono: il vescovo Cataldo di origi irlandese.

On the edge of the old city of Taranto, near Piazza Fontana and Ponte di Pietra, you will find the restaurant Risto dei Fratelli Pesce. Efficient service, very friendly and helpful staff. The owner was very friendly. We were 2 people: starters for 2 (consisting of 6 courses including salt cod, friselle with amberjack pate and olives, prawns in filo pastry and mussels au gratin) to which we added 2 local oysters; as first courses, I had the calamarata while my wife chose a trio of tartare. Two glasses of wine accompanied everything. We closed with two coffees and two bitters. All truly excellent. The final bill was 95 euro.

Apparently not a place you should visit as a non-italian speaking tourist. After waiting for quite a while we were presented the menu, the waiter that took our order couldn't even bring himself to smile and seemed rather annoyed. We asked if one of the starters (for 20€) was enough to share for two people, he said it was. It ended up beeing maybe 8 small pieces of raw fish with a tasteless tomatosauce. After the starter arrived, we waited and waited. Tables around us, even those that arrived after us (and all full with locals, i suppose) were served their primi, their secondi while we just sat there, getting more and more impatient. After beeing there for 1,5 hrs and only beeing served one plate of antipasti in that time we asked how long it would still take. Just minutes later our order came, giving us the feeling we were completely forgotten and only just now remembered. When the food arrived, the plates were basically thrown at the table without a single word or even an excuse. The food was good, but nothing special especially for the price they ask, it didn't make up the overall experience. My partner has been here months ago with a group of locals and the experience then was very different - that's why he wanted to come back in the first place but sadly it was a huge disappointment. We won't come again.

We were quite disappointed of the main dishes in general: some meals were ok and tasty but the risotto I ordered for example was really bad and boring (it was not tasty at all, only one small crayfish, and I did not feel satisfied after). I would not recommend this place and it was quite pricy too.

Restaurant
Trattoria L'Orologio in Taranto, Italy offers affordable dining with a well-managed and highly organized atmosphere. Their prices are surprisingly low, making it one of the cheapest places to eat in the country. Although the quality of ingredients may be simple and somewhat low, the value for money is excellent. The restaurant can get busy, resulting in a wait to enter, but once seated, service is quick and efficient.
5 star because of the price you pay for your bill. You will never eat as cheap around the country. Of course the quality of ingredients is simple and pretty low but this place is well managed and highly organized. The line outside can be frustrating at first until you see the outdoor menu that shows pasta dishes for as low as €3. We paid €22 and we ate more than enough.

Thought we would try this based on the good reviews. OK if you want super fast food for little money but certainly not somewhere for a relaxing meal. Quickly filled up after opening in the evening. We shared pasta e ceci to start, underseasoned. As soon as the plate was cleared the next course arrived. One small overcooked fillet of sea bass and one involtini di cavello which was fine. With a side dish of fagioli, water and wine the bill came to 28 euros.

Trattoria l'Orologio provides great value with affordable prices. First courses under 5 euros and mains for 7 euros. The food quality is decent and tasty - and would totally recommend it if in a hurry before getting on the train.

It is exactly what it says it is! Cheap food for a cheap price. You’ll wait a while (we waited 45 min) and then you’ll order your primi, wait and eat, order your secondi, wait and eat, etc. The servers are nice, the place is huge and packed, and it’s an experience!

We had a wonderful dinner at Trattoria L'Orlogio. Everything was delicious, very well cooked, the service was very fast and friendly. The prices are very low for good quality food. We tried the marinated polpo, the molds, some pasta, fish and meat, everything was very good.

Surprising low prices and good quality. You have to wait a bit to enter but while you sit everything goes fast.

Good service, cheap, fast and food is really good. It is always full and you can't book a table in advance, need to go and wait but it is worth it! It is a really local place where you can have the famous local cozze (mussels) and feel very local. Totally recommend it!

Great food.. Pizzas are particularly excellent. They are totally customizable, even the dough used is (you have a choice of white/wholemeal/cereal flour). It looks a bit too swanky for my tastes, but the prices are very honest. Definitely recommended!

Nestled in the heart of Taranto, Ricci - Pizzaioli dal 1963 is a culinary gem that has been delighting diners since its inception. This charming eatery specializes in an enticing array of Italian and Mediterranean dishes, with a particular focus on their mouthwatering pizzas. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it the perfect spot for both casual meals and special gatherings.
We have ordered the Panzerotti fritti, tipical fastfood from Puglia. Delicious!! I've been desiring to have a good Panzerotto e I'm definitely fatisfyed! We didn't get a table, but we could eat in these bar tables. Very clean place and pleasant atmosphere. Location is in a very beautiful square. Personnel are cordial and very professional. Next visit to Taranto I'm definitely going back there!

Bufala Burger! The best hamburger I've ever tasted! Interesting choice of burgers and craft beer. Burgers are served fresh prepared. The staff is very friendly and helpful! Would recommend and would love to come back!

Nice clean place, lots of variety, beer was good... except the pizza we ordered was super salty, to the point that two hours afterwards my mouth still felt salty....

Waited 25 minutes to get served, waiter walked past 5 times and ignored our table. We asked the waiter twice and got ignored. We spoke to the table next to us and they said they’d be waiting 45 minutes to pay!!! Awful service.

We recently visited Ricci for lunch and ordered two hamburgers along with sparkling water. The hamburgers were delicious. However, the overall cost for the two burgers and water was on the higher side. To add to the experience, the restaurant faced an issue with electricity, resulting in poor lighting in the room. This impacted the ambiance negatively, affecting our overall dining experience. Additionally, it was inconvenient that the cashier did not accept American Express, which was a bit disappointing considering how much we were paying.
